What Is a Fall Arrest System?

June 20, 2024

Many job sites require workers to complete job tasks from heights. In these situations, employers are required to provide fall prevention systems that are safe and effective. According to the publication Safety and Health, 54% of workers who were killed from heights had no access to a personal fall arrest system. 23% had access but were not using the system. A fall arrest system can save lives. Let's learn more about these systems and their importance.

Understanding Fall Arrest

Fall arrest is the term used to describe any system or method designed to stop a fall once a person has fallen. This differs somewhat from fall restraint systems which strap to a person and prevent them from falling in the first place. These systems consist of an anchor point or several, a harness for each worker, and self-retracting lifelines or lanyards. These connect the harness to the anchor points. When used correctly, the system will stop the person mid-fall before they reach a dangerous surface below.

In addition to these components, a fall arrest system also includes some type of shock-absorbing component to ensure that the force exerted upon the worker doesn't cause an injury.

Where to Use These Systems

Fall arrest systems are ideal for jobs where a worker must complete tasks in a large area right up to the side of a raised platform. This system should be used for workers who need to have a great amount of freedom to move around these areas and move and work near the edge.

Things to Consider

When planning a
fall arrest system, there are a few things you should consider. First, you'll want to consider the total fall clearance. This is the distance to ensure the worker doesn't contact the lower level. You'll also want to consider the free fall distance as well. How far will the worker fall through the air before the fall is arrested? The deceleration distance is also important as it's the amount of stretch the lanyard will have as the system decelerates the fall. Heights should also be considered, as well as anchor point height.
